“The Time Is Always Right To Do What Is Right”

January 16, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Guest speaker Reverend Julia Fankuchen.

“The time is always right to do what is right.” –Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.

Justice is an important topic among Unitarian Universalists–a topic which has taken many shapes over many times and places. And the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has long been an inspiration for the social justice work that UU’s engage in.

Ernesto Cortés Jr. is one of the community organizers who have carried on the work and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for many different facets of social justice including issues around voting rights, that still plague our country today.

Cortés is the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) co-chair and executive director of the West / Southwest IAF regional network. For those of you who are not familiar with the IAF, it provides leadership training and civic education to poor and moderate-income people across the US and the UK.

Cortés coordinates regional and national leadership schools that train grassroots leaders to develop community organizations based on access to political power through relationship building, and social justice initiatives. Over the years he has helped community members win water and sewage facility and other infrastructure improvements, election campaigns, including increased access to affordable housing, and has been instrumental in the building of over 30 grassroots organizations known for developing and training community leaders.

MLK’s words have inspired many Unitarian Universalist’s ministers including our speaker this Sunday, the Reverend Julia Fankuchen.

Reverend Julia attended Starr King School for the ministry, receiving a Masters of Divinity degree and following that she trained at The First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco and at Napa State Hospital. Subsequently she served ten years as the senior minister at the UU Fellowship in Redwood City. She is currently enjoying retirement in New Mexico.
