Rethinking Public Safety

October 15, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

Guest speaker David Ball. “Public safety is the term used to justify all manner of criminal prohibitions, but too often we fail to have a robust discussion about what it means. Police killings of civilians, for example, aren’t counted in homicide statistics. In this brief talk, I’ll raise some suggestions about alternative ways we might view who counts as the public, what counts as safety, and how those alternative answers might shape our discussion of the goals of criminal justice.”
David Ball is a Law Professor at the Santa Clara University Law School where he researches and teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, sentencing, and corrections. His articles have been published in the Columbia Law Review, the Yale Law and Policy Review, the American Journal of Criminal Law, and the Stanford Law and Policy Review. David also served as a Social Justice Teaching Fellow at Santa Clara, a Research Fellow at the Stanford Criminal Justice Center, and a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He graduated from the University of North Carolina and Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.
