Guest speaker Barby Ulmer, co-founder of Our Developing World (ODW), a non-profit educational project.

Barby Ulmer will present common histories of Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala, U.S. foreign policy, recent struggles and victories, what we can learn from them and what we can do. Slides of the Mayan around Lake Atitlan, Guatemala will end with the Mayan System of Justice that is so inspiring. Display boards, slides and Guatemalan handcrafts will highlight the program.

Barby Ulmer, with deceased husband Vic, were the founders and co-directors of Our Developing World (ODW), dedicated to bringing the realities of the “third world” and the richness of diverse cultures to North Americans by providing teacher training and materials, programs for community groups and classes, Reality Tours, and a tri–annual newsletter.

Formed in 1982, the non-profit organization strives to raise awareness of the struggles and triumphs occurring in developing countries. Reality Tours include trips to various countries in Central America, Southeast Asia and Africa. Next year the Reality Tours will include “Cuba and Nicaragua: Compare and Contrast” ( 2 weeks) and another to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala with a focus on the Mayans (one week).
